Late Australian telegrams state that the scarlet fever epidemic continues; fresh cases occurring daily, and some of the victims only suffering a few days' illness ; which we take to mean that the fever is of a most virulent type, speedily fatal. Some form of this disease has made its appearance in Auckland and at Coromandel, with fatal results, and it is only in the nature of things to expect that this district will receive a visitation from the scourge. Indeed, we have it on the word of a local medical gentleman that the sanitary condition of the Thames is such that it would not be surprising to find fever of a malignant type breaking out any day. This is a serious matter, and we hope some steps will be taken to provide for the worst that can happen.
