Miss Kate Dickinson, the heroine of the Baker affair, has received a kind and truly "womanly message from the Queeni' through the medium of Sir William Jen- 1 ner. Her Majesty expressed her feelings 1 of.greatest sympathy and kindness to. Miss Dickinson, and asks for the latter's photograph to be sent to. her. As a con-. trast to the circumstance which has. given occasion for this pleasing manifestation of the Queen's sympathy with what is good and noble, I may mention that a society is now in course of formation in London having for its object the protection of gentlemen from ladies when travelling by railway The promoters enumerate a great number of cases in which unprotected gentlemen hare been intimidated into giving "ladies" with whom they had journeyed alone a sum of money to prevent the laying of a most' hateful' charge—one, too, which is so difficult to' disprove under the circumstances, and one in which the popular feeling is at once biassed in favor of the complainant. It is alleged that among the victims of this species of extortion has been .the Duke of Wellington—the present holder of the title, I suppose. The society proposes to agitate for carriages in whjch it shall be compulsory for unattended females to travel; and to appoint inspectors at the principal railway stations. By these means, and the very fact of its existence, the society hopes to ensure the safety of helpless gehtlemeu travellers.
