THE REQUISITION TO SIR GEORGE GREY.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) 1 Sii,—! have" been asked^ would I"'sign? the above? .][-• replied,.., Np ! Why Because I consider ii "politically a dishonorable,, transaction;- dishonorable Ao, those; who have initiated,-and a,lsp it implies dishonor to him who/is to-receive it. In politics as well as in the most important relations? men may have with each other in every day life* honors integrity andi |Consistency should -be observed and adhered to by those who are, bra same 5 to be politicians. .Have those persons who have chiefly " got up " this requisition, in their political intercourse with Sir George Grey; acted in accordance with this maxim ? Indeed, the contrary is the fact. I therefore maintain that this requisition in spirit is a violation andy prostitution of each and ali'^of those principles. I well remember; when the meeting to consider the Ab^Ution Bill was held at the Theatre Eoyal, the chairman read a telegram from HisHonpr the Superintendent of the Province of Auckland requesting the meeting to postpone their decision on the question. Did they do so ? Indeed no. What did they do?' Why, they treated the request/apparently with ihe greatest? contempt. Again it will be remembered that the member -for City Westj A.uekland ] with the full force of his talent and ability earnestly * tried tbrget"' thei gold.'duty, abolished, a tax the retention of which at the present day is as true an-.index to the maladministration of the affairs , of the Colony as the magnetic needle is to the north -ipole. Well, how did those representativeTmen of the Thames then treat 5 him?' Indeed had he been some unknown " Jack Ketch " they could not have. treated;nim with greaterdiscfain, whilst in the meantime they would send their t telegrams. ;of; thanks i to, any jtijaeserving parasite in the Housei who would oppose • that < measure. 'Let* the^reader compare this conduct on their part with their present proceedings, and I am certain he will coincide with the opinion I have herein expressed, on the subject. ; So i much for some of the requisitionists^ Now let us consider the requisition in its bearipg directly upon Sir Gv,Grrey. -It is expected, that in order'to secure"another member for his ' party• in ' the next Assembly, that he will come to the Thames ;to ask to be elected its representative, and thereby leave his former constituency ; to;some.other person. To my mind.this is tantamount to saying that for such a. paltry consideration he would' abandon,, and show disrespect to a constitueincy 5" which has . shown. him respect " and even admiration, and .come and ask; for the suffrages of a constituency which in reality showed him neither defer- : ence nor respect when he required it. Should I proceed further- pn this topic I might, trespass on ground not within my province. I believe it is quite legitimate for me to remark in concluding, when His Honor receives the aforesaid requisition^ if he does ;not remember the telegram, and the gold duty,he is superior to human nature, or otherwise a victim to misrepresentation. /Ifc. might, be said that in writing this letter 1 am actuated by some opposition motive. I am not. If His Honor complies with the desire of the requisition I will vote for him, and in doing so will 1 feel.the pleasure of acting in accordance with truth and candour consistently.—l am, &c, , M. O'HiIEE.
