A gentleman came in from Waitekauri last night and brought with him a 5m9.1l piece of stone from one of the claims adjoining the Welcome, and recently pegged out. There was not a speck of gold risible, but when it was crushed it gave a magnificent prospect, quite equal to the Gem, at Tairua. Claims are- being pegged off daily, and every, hand is energetically employed in - opening up new ground. The reefs are tending in a direct line towards the Sarangahakei and are well defined solid bodies of good-looking stone, in a kindly sandstone country. It is tUe opinion of- everyone that the reef from, which" the rich gold and specimens which have been found in this district during the last five or six years have come, is not yet discovered, so there is a chance for your; unemployed to make the discovery, and better their fortunes. ,? The Karangahake is languishing for want of machinery. Probably when:the protection expires on the 9th proximo, more activity and energy will b« displayed in. getting up the stampers. The All Nations and Banyan are kept fully manned the prospects in both being of an improving character. The Junction expects shortly to cut, at a low level, a reef whichon the surface yielded well.
Operations are sometimes somewhat retarded for want of powder, the supply here being of a very limited naturesome of your merchants should see to that.
The next Warden's Court will be held on the 4th pros.; a large number of cases are set down for hearing.
Wylie and another, both representatives of farmers and others at Ballarat, Smeaton, &c.,. have lately been to Kati Kati, and the East Coast Districts on a tour of inspection. They contemplate the establishment of another settlement similar to that of Vesey Stewart's. Two blocks of land have been conditionally offered them by the General Government, one in the Province of Hawke's Bay, the other on the East Coast of this province. They expressed satisfaction at the suitability of the land for purposes of settlement, and will report favorably on the scheme.
The trisf survey party returned hero last night from Xati Kati having been unable to complete their survey owing to the opposition of the natives to the erection of the trig station (the last one required) on the Waihi reserve. The letter sent from here to tho Natives by Mr Puckey was received by them, but they were too busy planting to coiae here to see him. Had he gone there to see them on the matter, it is thought thajt a little explanation by him would have surely overcome their opposition, and the work would have been completed by this time. It is a most important station, being the connecting one with the East Coast, and all the work done in the Oliinemuri and Thames ' Districts cannot be laid down on the general plan until this connection is made. 1; One of the Vesey Stewart settlors (an I engineer) was bur;ied out on the 26th inst., and has unfortunately lost tools, luggage, and other things, which he brought out with him, valued at £200.
We are- not without our several festivities here. There was an evening party and dance at the Puke last ni.tht, which was largely attended. " Begone dull care" seemed to be the prevailing motto. It is the intention of host Austin, of the Paeroa, to give a supper- and dance on the evening of the Prince of Wales' Birthday. ;■-■.■;,
