UNITED PUMPING ASSOCIATION.

On Friday last, arrangnments were made for stopping (ho Big Pump, in order to effect repairs and througlily clean the engine, which from its great size entailed much labor; but by the combined energy of all hands, and judicious mechanical appliances used, this essential to the existence of mines in the neighbourhood, was started lifting the water again at six . o'clock this Monday morning. The engine is evidently all the better - for the overhaul, as the working is now performed smoothly and without the perceptible jar formerly existing. During the time the pump has been stopped, the water has risen 200 feet in the shaft, as well as flooding the 4CO feet level. It is, however, anticipated that in three days' time, the water will be out. The boilers have also been cleaned, and a great improvement is manifest by the introduction of a blast within the furnaces, causing the ignition of carbon, or black smoke, preventing the escape of clouds of blacks from the top of the chimney by utilising it as a fuel in the furnaces. Mr Box, with a gang of men, is also busy in preparing for \he erection of the new winding gear, the present overhaul being the most complete since Mr Black, the manager, took charge.
