" A Tairua Squatter " sends the following solution of the arithmetical problem which appeared in the Star of the 2nd instant: Let x = sum in pocket at starting. Then follows— 2x — 1 when leaving Ist pub. 4a; — 3 „ „ 2nd „ 8a; — 7 „ „ 3rd „ 16a; —15 „ „ 4th „ at = *| s = 11 jd = money at starting Another,, correspondent has sent us the same form, but worked out fully :— Let x = sum in pocket on entering Ist house. .*. 2x — 1/. == aum on entering 2nd house. ,\ 2(2x —1) —1 = sum on entering 3rd house. .'. 2[ 2 ( 2a; —1) —1 ] —1 = sum on entering 4th house. .-.2 £ 2[ 2 ( 2.r -1) —1] — 1 } —1 = sum on leaving 4th house == 0. .'. 16? — 15 = 0. . „. i?o — iiifi
