Wellington Gossip.

[By Telegbaph.]

(FBOM O.UB OWN COBHESPOJfDENT.)

"WELLINGTON. Saturday. I omitted to inform you that Sir J. L. C. Eichardson, while speaking (in committee) on the Abolition Bill, stated that he would move at a further period for the insertion of a clause for the division of the Colony into two great provinces, to bo divided by Cook's Straits. In him we find another advocate for insular separation and federal Government. No doubt Macandrew has got some such idea for Otago, in which province (to his credit be it said) the pertinacious old gentleman is bound up. Mr Taylor, a member of the Upper House, has obtained leave of absence in order to arrange for clearing himself of the staiu cast upon him, by the motion re disqualification. He was one of those alluded to as being open to suspicion of infringing the Disqualification Act by land transactions. Mr Brissenden's achievements in land jobbing have not made for him many friends amongst men who affect respectability. Exempli gratia: Two gentlemen were-conversing, when Mr Brissenden arrived on the scene. He said to one' of them he happened to know—"lntroduce me to Mr J ; I wish to know him." Mr J—— said to mutual acquaintance—" I hare no desire to know Mr Brissenden." Persons here who know nothing of the Thames and its vicinity say that the report on the Ohinemuri affairs points to a person holding higher office in the Government employ than Mr Brissenden, and the gentleman it points to is said to have announced his intention of standing for the Thames District at the next general election.

This day. Mr Bridges, Inspector of the National Bank, is to come before the Bar of the House to-day for examination. He will be accompanied by Mr Traver? as legal adviser. Some fun is expected. The Darrells opened in " Macbeth " on Saturday night.
