THE UNITED JUMPING ASSOCIATION.

The progress made during the last fortnight has been of a general character, rather than the particular object of. sinking the main shaft, 7 feet qt which has been performed, making ._ the total depth 604 feet. The manager, Mr Q-. Black, has made the opportunity serve of having a thorough overhaul, caused-by preparation for fitting up the new winding gear supplied by judd and Company, estimated to perform the necessary work connected with this undertaking that will enable operations to be carried on with safety to a much greater depth than jas yet attained. During the past we^k the whole of the 25 inch lift and rods have been cleared by chipping off the incrustation, that had in some parts accumulated to 1 inch in thickness; this deposit has been a great nuisance not only to the working iron gear, but causes the tools constantly in use to be constantly coated with lime, and consequently very irksome to use On coming up to the colder region, above the 500/ feet, the sediment is precipitated on to every available part, and; would ultimately choke the barrels, if not periodically looked after, besides adding [to the wear and tear. The boiiers have been cleaned out,, and the? large salt water reservoir is now in process, of throwing up the accumulated mud,, which was eight feet in *depth.' The most of this has. been removed by pumping, and will shortly be completed, enabling clean salt water to be temporarily used for the condenser and battery during the short time that it will be necessary to stop the pump, care'being taken to render this as short as practicable. The lifting power of the pump being fully able to cope with the inflow, no inconvenience is apprehended by the contemplated stoppage.
