CALEDONIAN.
Driving on the foot wall of No 5 lode continued, workmen being in with the dig some 40 feet. Yesterday, the first breaking down of the reef took place, and displaced a large quantity, showing a little gold, and leafing three feet of stone standing. Arrangements were made for crushing at the Prince Alfred mill. On a second shot being fired, it disclosed that the reef had squeezed up to 6 inches wide. This was unexpected, but characteristic of the reef, which may as quickly be found enlarged, and before the quartz is broke down to face of drive, will doubtless revert to its average size. The trial lot sent from No. 2 level, being portion of reef formerly cut, and rose upon for the purpose of effecting junction with Cure or No 5 lode without working from that company's level, has proved of a payable character, as well as the company's portion of the Young American reef.
