The Fight in Committee.
Determined Attitude of the
Government.
WELLINGTON.
Thursday.
On the House going into committee on the Abolition Bill Mr Sheehan, whip of the Opposition, moved that the chairman report progress, which motion is now being discussed. By this the Opposition hatfe shown no desire to discuss the question fairly, and the Government will in all probability sit ijt out, and, without entering info a; desultory discussion, which has prevailed hitherto, carry their object by force of majority. The Government disclaim any intention of forcing the measure through, without legitimate discussion, and :^Ave prepared to give ample time for the consideration of each clause ; but if the factious opposition continues they will be compelled to bring matters to a crisis in the manner stated.
