LICENSING COURT.

(Before Commissioners Fraser (Chairman),

Workman, Brown and Kennan, Esqs.) APPLICATION FOB LICENSE—-HAUEAKI.

James Stephens, Bullion Hotel, Tapu Creek, objected to by Mr j. A. Miller. A recommendation was read from Mr W. C. Daldy, stating the granting of a license to Mr-Stephens would benefit the district as there was no place where a good decent meal could be obtained. Mr Tyler said that the only objection irrespective of the unfavorable character of the police report, was from Mr Miller on behalf of a man named Jacobs a rival publ can. The Chairman said the licenses of the publicans at present there had been reduced on account of the small amount of business there was to be done, one house was quite sufficient aud the commissioners saw no reason to grant an additional house. Application refused. NEW APPLICATIONS FOE OLD HOUSES —DISTBICT OF THAMES. James Anderson, Golden Fleece, Grahamstown. No appearance of applicant. Application struck out. Duncan Macnab, Ballarat Hotel, Shortland. There was another applicant for a license for the same house, but he did not appear. Mr Bullen stated he had visited.the hotel lately, though unable to do so before owing to the house being locked up. The house was decently furnished. I\'o objection. Application grautcd. APPLICATIONS FOR TEANSFEI?S. James Devin, Empire Hotel, Grahamstown, to William McDowell. Granted. Albert Griffiths, Theatre Royal, to Sarah White. The chairman stated that the commissioners had made up their minds that they would not grant a license to any female unless she had been in the business before, and when he had granted the temporary license he had granted it subject to these conditions. Mr Macdonald applied to substitute the name of some male member of Mrs White's family. The application was adjourned until Monday 20th at 10.30.
