HOBART TOWN.

August 12. The Treasurer delivered his financial statement to-day. He stated that the, expenditure for the current year would be burdened with arrears from the past year, amounting to £14,000. At the close .of the present year the special rate on the Launceston and Western Eailway will expire yielding £10,000, the whole interest will then become chargeable on the Consolidated Eevenue; the cost of the main line of railway ">rwill; be a liability for the next ' year! to the amount to £16,25). The Government propose to extend, the main roads, to abolish tolls, and make repairs of the roads chargeable on .the. revenue. No considerable fiscal charges are proposed, but a temporary measure will be introduced to levy a rate of Is. in: the £ oh the annual value of property till the railway liabilities are ascertained; there will he no change in the Customs dues. The Public Works schemt, rejected last session, will be ;re-introduced,! amended, and extended.

Public opinion is against the levy of a rate on property, and it is probable Parliament will authorise the issue Of Treasury bills, if necessary. i
