PARAWAI HIGHWAY BOARD.
A meeting of the Parawai ratepayers was held in the school room, Parawai, yesterday evening for the purpose of electing a member of the Highway Board in the place of Mr Spencer, who had resigned. Mr H. Vernon, the secretary^, having read the advertisement calling the meeting, Mr Brassey was called to the chair, he briefly referred to the object for which the. meeting was called, and having read the sections of the Act which bore on the sub- - jeicfc, invited nominations. The following gentlemen were then proposed :-—Messrs Hogg. F. C. Dean. Avory, H. Stillwell and W. Brassey. A show of hands of those, in the room (very few were there at this time though more came afterwards) was then taken, which resulted in there being .five hands held up for Mr Avory, four each for Messrs Hogg and Brassey, and three each for Messrs Dean and Stilwell.
Mi' Spencer then demanded a poll on behalf of Mr Dean, which was taken. Messrs Miller and Lloyd being , appointed scrutineers. The result was I that the votes given were for Stillwell and Avoiy 14 each, Dean 12, and Brassey 10. Mr Hogg's name being withdrawn. ■ Mr Dean wished to record the votes of the Church Missionary Society and Mr Morris; from both of whom he holds power of attorney to represent them. i The Chairman ruled he could not do si), and Mr Dean recorded his protest against the refusal of the Chairman. ? The poll was then closed, and Messrs Stillwell and Avory having each obtained 14 votes, the Chairman gave his casting vote in favour of Mr Stillwell, who was declared duly elected. _ : A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings.
