PROSPECTING GRANT IN VICTORIA.

: We (Melbourne Telegraph) understand that a decision has been come to with • respect to the distribution of the vole of £10,000 for prospecting purposes, which was passed during the late, session of ? Parliament. It is known that in various gold mining districts there are extensive lava deposits which have never been gone through, though there is a scientific belief or theory that there are rich auriferous deposits below them, and it has been considered that a large portion of the rote could not be .better expended than by endeavouring to decide this by means of boring through the lava. A number of jtk prospecting " bores" can, it is estimatid,^P or, in fact, ascertained, be put down for what one shaft would cost in some of tho localities it is proposed to test, which, go far as is now settled, are five in number. It is proposed to spend some of the money at Ballarat, and test the ground north-west of the Botanical Gardeni. In the Bendigo district the search will be made south-east, of Bridgewater. Between Beaufort and Ararat is considered., to be another promising locality, and in the Ovens River district Morse Creek will most likely be tried for deep leads. The country south of Rokewood will also be tested. The permanent head of the Mining Department considers that tha £10,000 will be more than ample to thoroughly prove these five localities, and the balance of the vote will most likely be appropriated to prospecting in Gippsland, the special scene of operation! being - the high Dargo P-lains, T|»er# hai beei no definite distributioa made in the waj of allotting a certain amount to each particular district, as the expenditure will have to be regulated to a great extent bycircumstances.
