The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR P.M. Resurrexi. THURSDAY, MARCH 25, 1875.

'We learn that Mr William Foughy, the successful tenderer for No. 3 -section Thames Water Bace, has lost no time in .commencing bis contract, having put on about 20 men to-day. V

The new premises of the Union -Bank were opened for business for the firet tiree to-day. The building is very neat, and quite adequato to the requirements of the institution at the present time, comprising general banking room, manager's room, gold office, and Melting ' and assay department, and strong room—the latter not having been much damaged by the fire which destroyed the old premises., It is notified in the Provincial Government Gazette that the offices of , the Provincial Government will be closed from Friday, the 26th instant, until Tuesday, the 30th inatant, both days'inclusive, for the Easter holidays. It would be well if some steps were taken to keep in v state of preservation the really excellent road up the Waio-Karaka Creek, in view of the approaching winter, and especially as the progress of the mines along ! the line of route would causa a very considerable and heavy dray 1 traffic. To do this nothing more is required than that a man should be employed to throw up the metal, which haa already been caet to the sides since the formation of the road, and caused the centre to be hollow. * The Waio-Karaka is the most' important work" in 1 road making recently effected,, and it is to the interest of those who benefit by the road to maintain'it.

A EEWiBD of £100 is offered for tbo discoTery of a payable bed of coal near the harbour of Raglan, suitable for steam purposes. This l'eward is offered in compliance with, a resolution of the Provincial Council r assed during last session.
