SPECIAL SETTLEMENT PARTY RETURNED.
The party of eitfht who went; to the Fiako to inspect the land upon which ! they propose to settle returned this afternoon in the Buofla Ventura. They speak favorably of the country, haying,, travelled over a great extent of it while S. there. It has been decided to draw up* a report before proceeding any further in the matter, so that we are not in a position to give any further information,; A- fear is . expressed that the wishes of the would be settlers may not be regarded so favorably ■; now that they have lost a friend in the late Superintendent, who keld this ; special settlement of the/.lands of the Province as a pet scheme. All will .depend upon the views of him who succeeds Mr Williamson as Superintend dent. If he.favors the principle, a little delay is all the evil that may accrue. The party have been away over a week, and on their landing at Grahamstown Wharf presented the appearance of, a, band of lied Indians attired in European' vestments,, with swags and' Tspades and r firearms! It'appears that the party haV^'i "travelled each day (camping at night},* the country being rough and very often swampy.: Mr Prater informed our »--*, porter that they did not.hear of the'' '\ Superintendent's death until this morning, when the news was communicated t>y ** a steamer on her way to Ohinemuri. y ;>
