Fifth Day.

The wet weather yesterday interfered with the progress of the firing, the men having stopped after the sth Match had been fired, and did not commence the next until some considerable time after. However, the signs appeared less threatening when dinner had been disposed, and the Colonel signified that the next match' would be proceeded with.

In order to economise time, it was decided to fire at the 500 and 600 yards first, and then change the targets for the 200 yards range. This was done. The 500 yards range was completed, and 2 rounds at the 600 yards. The remaining five shots of 600 yards range were fired this morning. The men mustered at 6.30 and proceeded to the range, but there it was found that the targets were Tin very bad order after the wet night, so a considerable time was, lost before the shooting commenced. The scoring was not good, some of the men missing the target five times in succession, and the highest score made was only an average of centres,, that of Captain Gascoigne who won thereby the range prize of £"2. The morning broke very bright with strong wind blowing, which may account for the poor shootiug. The opinion at breakfast this morning was, that Wilson would take the belt to Otago this year, as, with his score at this ran^e, be was still at the head, but followed c'oseby by Blythe, who made 21 points, which places him within a point of Wilson. Ifc will be seen that Blythe made the same number as Gascoigne for the range prize, but the latter was awarded the prize by the regulations as regards scoring. The 200 yards range of this match was commenced after breakfast, and did not alter the general average very much.

(Although, as explained, this match teas partly fired yesterday, we give scores in detail in regular order)'-
