COMPULSORY EDUCATION.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)

Stb, —In your issue of this date I have read the " JRomantic Story," which, if true, proves that education will not keep one dying of starvation, and I have also read that the new Education committee or some of them wish for the compulsory clauses to be enforced. Now sir, as this matter requires ventilation, I do hope space will be given in your paper to views however opposite, and that those interested will not be led by party feeling: in coming to a decision. My feeling is that the compulsory clause should not be j enforced, if ifc could be, especially while everyone is being rated for the education of the children. Even were the education free lam doubtful if it could be carried out in the manner now proposed, for it might hinder both parents and children from getting proper sustenance for the body while they are compelled to look after the mind. It is evident quite enough children attend the public school, without compulsion, for the accommodation and the teachers to look after, and the question arises whether if these clauses are enforced it frill better the accommodation or make the schools more efficient, or get any more children educated than now.-—I am, &c M X. E.
