QUEEN OF THE MAY.

The sinking of the winze from the level that was driven in from the Queen of Beauty has flagged for the last few days, consequent upon the contractors' non-acceptance of the rise afßxed by the manager upon the original price. Therefore new tenders are called for. The depth sunk by the late contractors is 26 feet. The first ten feet was very hard ground, which had the effect of squeezing the lode down to about ten inches wide. After that depth was gained the country became kinder, with a proportionate increase in the 3ize of the lode : so that at the bottom it is now 15 to 18 inches wide. The quartz, therefore, is of a promising character, andalthough contractors asarale do not overhaul the stuff to loot for the precious metal, yet every few days it has been too payable to be unobserved. The intended depth of this winze is over 80 feet, to be equal to the new level that will be opened from the pity of London shaft, and is in such a position that about a fortnight's driving from the latter company's shaft will effect communication. The winmng of quartz from this mine, is contingent upon how soon the City of London commence work, for the arrangements between the two companiea are that each starts to ope* out so soon as the chamber is completed. With these foregoing companies at work early in the now year, I hone to see the upper portion of the Waio-Karaka Creek turning out a very large quantity ©f quartz, sufficient to absorb the large amount of crushing power now idle.
