CITY OF YORK.
The contractors are busy with the erection of the whim, and" this morning successfully got into position the winding drum, so that in the course of a few days the whole affair will be in complete working order. The depth of the shaft is 201 feet, and it is the intention of the directory to call for tenders for the sinking of 82 ieet more, which will bring them as deep as the cap of the London level, from whence, this latter company obtained the reputed good crushing from the City of York boundary. Some distance will have to be driven from the bottom of the shaft, (somewhere about 120 feet) ere the reef is intersected, and it will be as close as possible to where the City of London got the gold. It is probable that after the reef is intersected, they will break into the City of London level without loss of time, in order to secure ventilation, and if possible to send the dirt away via the City of London engine shaft if arrangements can be niade to that effect. This latter course would be preferable to hauling it through their own by means of the horse whim, and in the long run would be cheaper. The recent call that has been made may give sufficient funds to sink the shaft to its required depth, and also to touch the reef; but it is on the
cards that another call will; have to be j made ere the output of quartz begins.
