SERIOUS ACCIDENT IN TOOKEY'S MINE.
A shocking accident occurred in the Tobkey mine last evening, by which one of the men employed nearly lost his life^ It happened that a man named Francis Gardiner went £6 work'on the four o'clock
shift, and in blasting ground, he and his mate had drilled a hole, when Gardiner, proceeded to charge it. Having done so, he put some paper on top of the, powder, and was in the act of tamping it home with an iron tamping-bar or the drill, when the charge went off in his face, completely blinding him —it is hoped only for a time. His arms are also fearfully burned. His mate gave the alarm, when Gardiner was sent to surface,, and conveyed to the hospital, where Eis painful injuries were attended to. The wounded man had for years been workings in hard ground, and was conversant with; the use of powder. His mate had a most narrow escape, he was stooping down .atv the time of the blast, so it must have gone over him. It is little use moralizing after! a poor fellow is hurt, but such a' lesson as this accident should not be forgotten by, our miners..,.,On enquiry at the hospital this morning it was learned that Gardiner was better, ,bus in great pain.
