THE BIRD IN HAND.

Mining operations are being carried on vigorously in the low level towards the hill, 314 feet, carrying a reef about two feet thick. There is no work being done at present in the, drive towards the. sea, but work in; th;at; direction will "shortly be resumed." The shaft is now down 40 feet below the present lowest drive, but it is intended to sink a further 40 feet before an opening out set will be placed in position.., The ground the shaft is being sunk through is, from the appearance of the shaftings, very hard. The drive at the 160 feet level is now within 179 feet of the Queen of the Thames boundary, ,and at the 224 feet level, within 187 feet of the same company's ground. The reef is in sight in the roof for upwards of 540 feet, but slantiest at present in the hill end. The results of the crushirigs from this mine vara so successful that, I am informed, at an early date the mine will be in a dividend-paying position.
