THE QUEEN OF THE THAMES.
This company's gplendid shaft is now down about 180 feet?and timbered within a few feet of the bottom. A good deal of the country gone through has been very hard, but on Saturday last a most favorable prospect came in the stuff being sunk through, the pick being more freely iised. There is n6 bottom !water to: speak of, although a.little comes in from the surface ; the Whim and poppet gear work admirably. Ido not know how deep it is intended to carry the shaft down, some are of opinion tha| one of the reefs known to be in the ground will be cut in sinking ' The prospects of the Queen of the Thames Company are certainly very good, the Bird in Hand' reef having ' being now driven on to within 179 feet of the boundary at the 224 feet level, the reef striking directly into the Queen of the Thames ground, and as.the same reef is in sight underground for 540 feet there is little fear of its dying away, as the country is not hard enough to pinch it in.
