THE TOOKEY.

Mr. Dewar, the manager, this morning afforded me the following information:— That the sinking of the main shaft has necessarily been/stopped for eighteen days, consequent on the alterations in the United Pumping Association's system of pumping, and as that company anticipate resuming pumping operations to-morrow, should the start be. successful the Tookey shaft will be drained in time to resume sinking on Monday or Tuesday next. The water has risen in the Tookey shaft to the same level as that in the United Pumping Association,. and is within 3 feet of the 300 feet level. The drive north along the reef is now in 175 feet; 16 feet from the face, a blue-stone dyke was met with running nearly" at right angles with the drive. The dyke is exceedingly hard; during the last three weeks only 13ft. 6in.'having been driven. A cross drive cut has been put in to the j right and left, owing to a heave havingoccurred in the country at this level (300 feet) at 88 feet from the entrance of the drive. A cross drive was put in east along the leader, and its junction with a large reef proved at 25ft. from the level. This lode is supposed to be the same as the cross cut from the shaft; 60 feet in advance of the latter a cross-cut was put in to the south at 14 feet from the level; Another reef was cut, and a drive along its course is now being, continued; a trial crushing from which, will be made in order to prepare for the thorough ventilation of the Tookey Company's works from the 400 level as well as that of the United Pumping Apsocia-' tion. An enlargement and repairs to the air "courses in Tookey's are being completed. ' Furnaces will be placed in posir tion, and a chimney will be built at the top of Tookej'shill, which will act as a duct for the upcast of foul air.
