THE PUMPING ASSOCIATION.

Mr. Errington reports that the alteration in the United Pumping Association shaft is nearly completed ; the works being so far advanced that the pump will be at work to-morrow. By the use of a second plunger a great saving of steam is expected to be effected, and the old weekly stoppages for bucket changing will be avoided —no small item in the company's previous costs ; but it must be remembered that when sinking is resumed, the old plan from the bottom of the present shaft will have to be temporarily resorted to for lifting the water. It is Mr. Errington's opinion that it will take about four days from the start to clear the mine of water, and that one week will suffice to enable the men to resume work below.
