Thb Thames Young lien's Mutual Improvement Society held their weekly meeting last night in »he Hall of the Mechanics. The proceedings of tha Society are not limited to debates: the different members read essays of their own compositions, give recitations &c, thereby giving a more varied interest to the meeting. The subject for debate last evening was " Universal suffrage." Mr Scott in the affirmative j Mr McGowan supporting the negative argument. The Society as far as can bo seen from its short existence, gives promise of permanency, the members generally taking a lively interest iq their work. Three gentlemen enrolled themselves as members yesterday evening, and there can be little doubt tha*; the Society will continue to increase in strength as its usefulness will become apparent.
