The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. THURSDAY, JUNE 11, 1874.

The answer of the Superintendent to the | deputation which waited, upon him yesterday cannot be regarded as satisfactory. Mr Williamson in effect says that Tararu wharf will be made good to obviate public inconvenience, leaving the question of costs to be afterwards adjusted between the Government and Borough Council. His Honor seems indisposed Jto recognise the Council's right or province to administer any trust connected with harbors and wharves, and yet his own remarks about the adjustment of costs could seem to imply that he will call upon the Council some day to pay for the repairs now being effected at Tararu. The Council must disabuse His Honor of this idea. They have no right to be called upon for any such expenditure. If the Superintendent and his Executive would render assistance in getting the foreshore handed over to the Borough Council or some other local body, there could be.no possible objection to the rents from this endowment being made chargeable with the present or any future works to be undertaken, but it would be too much to expect that the citizens of this Borough will tax themselves to build wharves for the convenience and profit of public companies. We fear that the deputation have accomplished literally nothing. The Superintendent appears to have his own ideas of what is good for the Thames and what should be done ; and the strongest representations of residents are powerless to turn him from his purpose. The Provincial Government are without funds to do anything for us, and if they do not throw obstructions in the way they certainly do not render that assistance which the local authorities and the public of this district, have a right to expect.
