PLEASANT POINT.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) TOWN BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Town Board was presided over by Mr M. Maze, all the Commissioners being present. Correspondence was read as follows:

From Timaru Borough Council re heavy traffic.

From Mt. Coolc Motor Co., in reply to the Board’s protest against the speeding of service cars through the township. The letter thanked the Board for drawing their attention to the matter, and stated that the driver had been warned.

From the Department of Health re an increase in the fees for the services of the Health Inspector.— The proposal was considered reasonable, and on the motion of Messrs Oborn and Kendall was agreed to. From the Forestry Department re planting of trees. —Referred to the Domain Committee.

A firm in Christchurch wrote asking information regarding the supply of white clay which is obtainable from the district.—-The clerk was instructed to supply the. information required. - ■

Other correspondence from the Valuation Department,'S-.C. Publicity Agency, arid-publisher of the Local Authorities’ Handbook, was received.

The report-of • the. Finance Committee showed that after paying that night’s accounts amounting to £142 2s Sd, there would be a credit of £22G 8s at the bank. Rates amounting .to £4O were outstanding. The Domain Account was £4 3 in credit. The position was considered very satisfactory. •The Works Committee recommended payment of an account of £4 4 from--Mr Lienert for the new dray. The Board was recommended to raise a loan to build a new stable, and horse feed and implement shed. The chairman said the proposal could be put before the ratepayers at the same time as the poll, which was necessary in answer to the petition of the ratepayers.

Messrs Oborn and Rendall moved: “That the report be referred back to the committee to procure an estimate of the cost, so that the proposal can be placed before the ratepayers.’’ —Carried unanimously. The Works Committee were instructed to report to next meeting upon all gorso growing on the roads; ali high fences at corners, which impede a proper view of moving traffic; and all fences which are overgrowing the footpath, with a view to having these nuisances rectified.

The application of the Pleasant Point branch of the Plunket Society for a renewal of the Board’s annual grant, was approved. It was agreed to erect “Unsafe for Heavy Traffic’’ notices at the “Pound” bridge.

The foreman was instructed to make application for ’subsidy on Main Highways' maintenance, and forward it to the Highways Board. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. Mr W. E. Oborn presided at the monthly meeting of the School Committee. Correspondence was received from the Timaru Borough Council and N.Z. Railways, relative to the annual excursion to Caroline Bay. The headmaster reported that the opening roll numbers had been 180 in primary and 30 in secondary departments. Miss Cumming had commenced duties as probationery assistant, and Mr Baird as probationer. The recently installed electric pump was giving entire satisfaction. Mr Oborn, as visitor, reported on a number of matters which required attention at the school. —It was agreed to comply with the recommendations, and to make application to the Board to have the interior of the shelter sheds painted.

It was agreed to levy a small charge per operation to cover laundry and electrical expenses at the dental room.

' -Members spoke strongly against the attitude of the delegates from the South Canterbury Schools Committees’ Association at the recent South Island conference, in supporting the remit which advocated the Deoartment discontinuing the setting up of district high schools in any place with less than a population of 5000. A recent leading article in the “Herald” which, fully explained the proposal, was: favourably commented upon: As a protest, it was decided to withdraw from the Association. '', -■ • ... Mr Wakefield ' was • appointed visitor for March. Accounts amounting to £l6 were passed for payment.

NOTES. Mr A. Lambert, a local angler, was successful in landing two very fine salmon of 18 and 19 lbs. weight at the Rangitata mouth recently.' Before proceeding to her new appointment at Marunui, Miss Cooling was the recipient of a beautiful present from her present and past pupils of Pleasant Point school. Mr L. M. .Isitt addressed an enthusiastic meeting in the Presbyterian Hall recently, when a strong branch, with Rev. McNeur as chairman, and Mr W. Halstead as secretary, was formed to further the interests of the Bible in Schools League in the Point district. The Timaru West School , picnic will be held at Pleasant Point Domain on a Saturday in March.
