TEMUKA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.), OBITUARY. Word was received in Temuka yesterday afternoon that Mr W. Muir, a former resident, had died suddenly m Hamilton. Mrs and Miss Muir were on a visit to Temuka, and were playing a croquet match, and when the news was conveyed to them by Mr Scrimshaw they immediately left for homo. The late Mr Muir was in bustness as a grocer for many years, and prior to coming to Temuka he was in the employment of Messrs Porter and Dawson, Timaru. . Much regret was expressed in Temuka yesterday when it became known that the Rev. Charles Macdonald, M.A., had passed away tile previous day at Wanganui. The late Mr Macdonald was pastor of the Temuka Presbyterian Church for twenty years, retiring on account of ill-health about three years ago. , During his term of office the present beautiful brick church and handsome Sunday-school building were erected; also the church at Orari, and the. Su-nday-school at Milford. During the wafl he was a tower of. strength to the community, always optimistic, even in the darkest hours, and able to .give l reasons for his optimism. On his retirement from Temuka he went to Nelson to reside, and eighteen months later he. removed to Wanganui,, where he partly resumed duty, assisting the Presbyterian minister in that city. PERSONAL. ; The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs G. B. Cartwright) and party returned from Dunedin on Sunday.
Col. McKenzie, of the Salvation Army Headquarters staff, visited Temuka j'esterday and made an inspection of the Salvation Army Boys’ Home at “Green Hayes.” Commissioner Hoggard will visit Temuka to-day, and will give an address in the Salvation Army Hall this evening. • . ■ Mr Harper, Timaru, relieving secondary assistant, ommenced duties yesterday in the Temuka District High School. Mr G. T. Walker returned from Dunedin yesterday. • TENNIS CLUB. The last tournament of the season liad to be postponed owing to wet weather, and will be held to-morrow (Wednesday) afternoon. The courts will be closed for top-dressing after
that date. The tournament will take the form of a combined doubles, with sealed handicaps. The players will play in sections. The following will play in Section I, commencing at 1.30: —Misses R.'and F, Pearse, Oldfie’d, Poultney, Twomey, Comer, Green, Haneox, Wareing, M. Topliam, M. Harris, Murray, Mrs Palmer, Mrs Topliam, Mrs Fisher, Messrs W. Pearse, R. Leo, F. Comer, G. Watson, G. Webb. Section 2, at 3 p.m. —Misses Elder, Davidson, Manson, Mansell, Scrimshaw,
Slattery, Whitehouse, Bremn'er, Smart, Messrs Malcolm, Smart, Graiit, Ritchie, Stephens, Veitch, Walker, Muir, McPherson. Any player whose name is not included in- the above list is asked to attend and take part in either Section 1 or Section 2. HARVEST THANKSGIVING. Harvest thanksgiving services were held on Sunday at St. Peter’s, Temuka, and at Waitolii. The ladies of both congregations had bestowed great pains on decorations, with the result that both churches looked beautiful with flowers, evergreens, wheat, oats, fruit and vegetables. There was a' very large congregation at the morning service at St. Peter’s, when the vicar (Rev. G. N. Watson) officiated, • and
Sunday School children subscribed a large number of special gifts for St. Saviour’s Orphanage. In the evening, the service was conducted by Rev. G. V. Gerard (Timaru), when there was another large congregation. - The vicar officiated at Waitohi in the afternoon, and the fruit and vegetables from both churches are to be donated to the St. Saviour’s Orphanage.
REGINALD DENNY TO-NIGHT. Anything is likely to happen on a motor trip into the country'. That was the theory Byron Morgan had when ho wroto “California Straight Ahead.” Appreciating the humour attendant on such a trip, Universal starred Reginald Denny in a film version of the story', which is to be screened at Temuka to-night. The result is one of the most highly entertaining and diverting comedies of the year, in which Denny pilots a specially' built bunga’ow ou wiieols to California, goes through storms, a circus runaway, an elopement, and an automobile race. Denny' is supported by a big cast, including Gertrude Almstcd, Lucille Ward, and Tom Wilson. The supporting pictures include tho latest news reel and a good comedy. NOTES. : The wool-classing class in connection with the Technical, School will start this evening. The Chuideboye Carnival will he held in Mrs J. Kyne’s paddock on Thursday, commencing at 10 a.m. A very attractive programme: comprises novelty' i.horse events,, motor driving, chain stepping, baby shows, and races for adults and children. A dance will ho held in the evening.
