Railway Excursions From Timaru. BIG THINGS NEXT WEEK. ' The district traffic manager and the railways business agent for Otago and Canterbury, who were in Titnaru yesterday, informed a representative of the 1 “Timaru Herald,” that the Department was prepared to provide facilities for a big excursion to Dun- 1 edin at the end of next Week, on the lines suggested in a leading article In this journal yesterday morning. The traffic manager said that the Railway Department ■would run excursions on Saturday, April 24, provided some friendly society, school committee, trade or industrial union or other body approved by the Department would accept responsibility for organising the excursion and selling the tickets. The fares Would then be fixed, as for a picnic party, all second class: S/10 for adults;' and 4/11 fob Children. I The trains would leave at 6 a.m. Snd return late on Saturday night. , The Department will arrange to start one train at Washilyke if sufficient inducement offers. , ' 1 ' Already Similar excursions, or railway picnic parties, have been successfully organised in other parts of the South Island, and the railway officials are.quite prepared to grant 'the; same concession to residents Of Tifnaru and district for what might be termed a “ final flutter ” on April 24;
It is understood that one or two local societies are already. negotiating with the Department with the object Of availing themselves of the generous concession offered to local Societies, committees, or unions which are prepared to organise the Outing and dispose of the tickets.
