(From Our Own Correspondent). FOOTBALL SEASON OPENS. The football season opened in Waimste on Thursday, when several of tho ' clubs indulged in friendly _ games. Playing against Huimai, Northern registered a win by 5 points to nil, Mr J. Mumford carrying the whistle. The game between School and Athletic elided in a win for the former by nine points to six. Mr J. Menzies controlled the game. BOWLING SEASON, CLOSES. The official closing of the Waimate bowling green was held in beautiful weather on Thursday afternoon. Progressive pairs were played, and every rink was occupied. The green was in perfect order, and reflected great credit on the caretaker and Mr T. Dyer. The winning skip, W. I l ’. Morrinson, with 51, was closely followed by Messrs C. Manchester, Creemer, and W. Penman, with o wins each. The lead prize was won by. .J,. Reeve, who tied with A. • Dunstan, bur won by • having the highest aggregate of points in tho first two matches. Tho thanks of members are due to Mrs Robinson and Mrs Dale for supervising tho afternoon tea. OBITUARY. There passed away on Thursday, at his home, at Redeliff, a greatly Tc-spocted resident, in tho person of Mr William Brown, who was wellknown among the farming community

as a most successful farmer. Tho deceased gentleman was considered to be a great judge of horse flesh, and was a noted breeder of Clydesdales. Among liis many activities, the late Mr Brown was particularly successful with the Border Leicester and Romney breeds of sheep. He took a great interest in ploughing matches, and has been a valued member and committeeman of the Waimate Ploughing Match Association since its inception somo years ago. His services 'as a judge of ploughing were in great demand, and ho frequently acted as judge at the matches held by outside associations. The late Mr Brown was held jii high regard by all who knew' him, and the sympathy of- all is extended to his bereaved family.- , The interment is to take place at Waimate Cemetery to-day. :

JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL. Tlie advisability of establishing a Junior High School at Waimate will be dealt 'with at a public meeting in the Temperance Hall, Shearman Street, on Monday, at 8 p.m., .when an address will be given by Mr -J. C-aughley, director of education. ALARM OF FIRE. An alarm of fire shortly before nine o’clock last night brought the Brigade cut promptly to' an outbreak in a loosebox at tho rear of-G. S. -Meredith and C-o’s. premises.- Tho blaze was confined to some loose straw and a matchboard partition, but was extinguished before any damage was done. There was nothing in the adjoining looseboxes, and the fire, if it had spread, would have burnt itself out without doing any great damage.
