NEW ZEALANDERS IN SYDNEY. MATCHED AGAINST STATE TEAM. By Cable —Press Association —CopyrlfiL Australian and N.Z. Cablo An.ociatlan. (Received April 9, 10.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 9. The first serious game in which the New Zealand tennis representatives participated took place to-day, when they met New South AA T ales, whose team, with the exception of Anderson, was the best available. The weather was ideal, there tieing no wind. The bright sunshiny caused little trouble. The New Zealanders, although beaten, gave a very creditable display, especially Wallace and Smyth, who in the doubles beat Kalms and AVillard (N.S.AV’s strongest combination). In the singles, France and Andrews gained victories against Cummings and Peach respectively. Cummings appeared not to exert himself too much. Fraiico cleverly placed the ball well away from him. AYallace and Baker provided the best singles exhibition. Baker’s back hand play was oil the weak side. Wallace took full advantage of this. Baker, however, is a tall man, with a long reach, and he gained many points at net. Seay commenced well against Kalms, but tired in the second and third sets. Andrews, driving forcefully, kept Peocli on the run. In the doubles, the New Zealand ers’ combination was not all it should be. This was doubtless due, in a large measure, to lack of practice, owing to the recent wet weather. In the first set of the games against Kalms and AVillard, the New Zealanders (AVallace and Smyth) kept to ihe back line, and cvonsequently lost. In the second and third sets they came forward to the net and volleyed their opponents’ strokes and won. Scores:—■
