PERSONAL.

Mr D. L. Popplewell, Mayor of Gore, is at present on a visit to Timaru. Mr Poison was in Timaru yesterday making preliminary arrangements for a performance by the Argyll and: Sutherland Highlanders’ Band on May' 6. - Mr H. A. Knight, chairman of directors of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, was in Timaru yesterday. He returned north by the second express. Mr A. W. Piddington, of Dunedin, has come to Timaru and taken over the management of J. Mill and Co., in succession to Mr T. D. Young, who has retired.

Mr AV. Thomas, M.A., Rector of the Timaru Boys’ High School, loft yesterday on a trip to England, America and the Continent. He was given a cordial send-off at the railway station, by a number of friends. Captain E. -V. Conway, touring manager of the English Futurists, is in town completing arrangements for the visit of liis company to Timaru on A\ rednesday and Thursday next.

A pleasant function was held at the office of tlie Perpetual Trustees Co., when the staff met to bid farewell to Mr P. B. Foote (late district manager for the Company at Timaru), oil .his severing his connection with the firm. The general manager (Mr Ibbotson) expressed tlie. regret his associates felt at Mr Foote’s leaving, and on the other hand their satisfaction in knowing that the future offered such bright prospects for him, and as a token of the esteem in which he was held, ho presented Mr Foote with an attache ease and case of pipes. Mr Foots has entered into partnership with Messrs Geo. Bowker and Co., of Timaru. Much interest is being manifested in the visit to Timaru of His Lordship, Bishop AVest-AVatson, who will arrive here by the second express from Christchurch to-morrow. Later he will attend the garden party at St. Saviour’s Orphanage and will take tlie opportunity to inspect that institution. On Sunday morning His Lordship will preach in AVaimate, and in the afternoon he will conduct a children’s service at St. Mary’s, Timaru. On Sunday night the Bishop will preach at St. Mary’s at 6.30. On Monday night there will be a public reception to the Bishop in the Bay Hall. At this, the Yen. Archdeacon Julius will preside, and the speakers will include the Mayor of Timaru (Mr G. J. AVallace). and the Rev. B. Gladstone Hughes (representing the Timaru Ministers’ Association") .

A pleasant little ceremony, albeit tinged with sadness, took, place at the offices of J. Mill and Co;', ill Timaru, yesterday, when farewell was taken of Mr T. 1). Young, wlio is retiring from the firm named after 38 years’ service in Timaru, and 45 years altogether. The staff, and a number of clients of the- firm, were present, ' Mr AVilliam Gibb, chief accountant, presiding. In appropriate terms, Mr Gibb expressed the sincere regret which Mr Young’s retirement occasioned, and on behalf of every member of the staff heartily thanked Mr Young for the consideration which ho had at all times shown them, without in any way sacrificing the interests of his employers. Mr Gibb then presented l Mr Young with a well-filled wallet with which to purchase something to koep green the memory of those with whom he had been associated in Timaru for so long. Air Gibb’s remarks were supplemented bv others present, and Air Young feelingly acknowledged the .substantial gift and" the kindly sentiments by which it was accompanied.
