NOTES ON THE RACING
(Special to the “Herald.”) Conditions wore, almost perfect at Addington to-dav,.the Track bc.ng fast, the atmosphere light, and scarcely a breath of wind. ’Hie result was high class racing and- retold tunes. 1 4] 10 President’s Handicap was featured by ' attractive efforts ■* of W aitalvi tiii l and AJ intori. Derby, and the last named was responsible for establishing new figures : in* the filial event of the clay. ’1 lio Champion Stakes proved a. gift for Native Chief, who displayed marve lons speed, pacing the middle mile in about 2.10. Unhoppled trotters also provided a fine exhibition of speed, John Mauritius showing 4.31 2-5 in tho Suinmei H Nourmahal, Peter McMillan and Hapiiv Rosa were the popular p.cks for flic Harvest Handicap, hut none of the trio had anvthing to say in lie finish. Parole Bells failed to begin, and Happy Rosa lose ground by an early break. Reta. Vivian took up the running from Peter McMillan, and Engagement soon trotted into third place, followed hv Rando'pli and Mount Royal. Randolph soon lost his place, and both Queen Ida and Happy Rosa made expensive breaks. Commencing the last circuit Reta Vivian was just in front of Engagement- and Peter McMillan. with Queen Ida at the head
of the bunch. Engagement drew out half a mile from home and led round the last bend from Queen Ida and Randolph. . Trotting steadily all the way Engagement won nice y by a couplo of lengths from Randolph, who outstayed Queen Ida and defeated her by three lengths. Mount Royal was fourth, just in lront of Frisco Beau. Engagement, who is a converted pacer trained at Winchester by R. Toivnley, cut almost five seconds off her handicap time without being extended. Queen Ida and Happy Rosa showed groat hursts of spee<l. but ruined their chances by mixing their gait. 11l tho mile saddle race, Pointalena was a £SU better favourite than the unlucky' Darknite, with Golden Devon and Lutona also well backed. Asturio and Rebel failed to go oil', and King Dillon and Whctu broke soon after the start. Joyful and Pointalena raced down the straight, attended by Reta, Latona, Bellfastiion and Golden Devon. At the back the leaders were Pointalena, Reta, Joyful, Golden Devon, Latona, and Ben Oliau. Pointalena and Reta were Still in charge at the bend, where Golden Devon, Ben Oliau, Darknito and Latona were bundled just behind them. Golden Devon paced to the front in the straight, and stalling off a challenge by Darknite, won comfortably' by' half a length. lien Oliau was two lengths further hack, a neck ahead of Homer. Reta fell a furlong from home, but her rider escaped injury. Golden Devon, who is trained by G. Dench, is a brilliant track worker, hut had been very disappointing this season in his puhl.e essays. Darknite, who has registered a string of seconds without notching a win, was unlucky enough to’shave another second off his handicap. Waitaki Girl, Black Admiral and Jack Potts had most adherents for the President’s Handicap. Partner, lost all his handicap in the first furlong, and Waitaki Girl and ' Logan Chief dwelt slightly’. At the end of half a mile Kohara was showing five lengths of daylight from Harbour Light, Dream.'ilion, Logamvood and Jack Potts. At the mile the order was much tho same but tho field was in fairly' close company' with the exception of Partner. Six furlongs from homo Ivoliara was leading from Queen’s Own, Black Admiral, Dreamalion and Logamvood. Kohara shot away’ at the hack, where he was three lengths in . front of Queen’s Own, who was hotly pursued by' Black Admiral and Waitaki Girl. Racing round the last bond, Kohara was just clear of Waitaki Girl, with Jack Potts moving into third place, and Minton Derby travelling fast on the outside. In the run to the post Minton Derb.v cut down the leaders, and won brilliantly by’ two lengths from Jack Potts, who got up to beat Waitaki Girl by a length. Countryman finished at a great rate on the extreme outside, and in another two or three strides would have been third. Kohara and Logamvood were only heads further back. All the placed horses recorded electric times, Minton Derby doing 4.22 2-5, Jack Potts 4.24 3-5, and Waitaki Girl 4.22. The last named took some time to run the 84 yards to the scratch mark, and was timed to run the two' miles from post to post (with a flying start) in 4.18. Minton Derby' traversed the same distance in under 4.20.
When tho figures were balanced on the Halswell Handicap, Becky Logan was showing about £2O more than the Kennei-ley-traiiied couple (Peter Bingen and Eight Ever). When the lever was pulled Fashion Queen repeated her customary stunt of standing on the mark. Prince Lyons look up the running from Peter Bingen and Talent, but after half a mile had gone, the front division comprised Peter Bingen, Golden Devon, Prince Lyons, Talent, Judge Hancock and Becky Logan, tin? whole lot being bunched, except Black
Lila, and Fashion Queen. Leaving the straight for the last time, Peter Bingen, Golden Devon anil Succession ivero almost in line, just in front of Judge Hancock and Talent. At the Tanks Peter Bingen and Talent were in charge, and they led round the ,bcnd from Escort (who secured a lucky opening on the rails), Eight Ever, Becky Logan and Succession. Fight . Ever soon dropped out, and once in line for home Talent drew away and came on to win by a length and a half, from Escort-. Two lengths further back camePrince Lyons, Becky Logan and Succession with necks .separating them. Tho Champion Stakes was voted such a certainty for Native Chief that the Southland-owned gelding was backed to the extent of 3394 chances, compared with 497 on the Ayr-Nantwicli couplet, which carried nearly all the remaining 'money. Ayr led out from Nantwich, the favourite, who was not hurried, being last to move. Ayr and Nanawich were sonic lengths in front of Logan King at the end of half a mile, hut in the next furlong Native Chief jogged into third place, and entering tlie straight lie and Nantwich ran past Ayr. With a round to go the favourite said good-bye to the others, and was a dozen lengths in front at the half mile. Gradually increasing his advantage, the Chief came home in leisurely fashion forty or fifty' yards in front of Ayr, who beat William the Great by a length. Despite the ease with which the winner accomplished his task, he stepped the thirteen furlongs at better than a. 2.14 gait. Some Wilkes, Event and Wharepiana were pretty evenly hacked for the April Handicap. Some Wilkes, Bing Boy, Lord Bingen aiid Raiiiaroa all lost more or less ground at the start, dr before they had settled down. Dixie’s Pride set the puce to Ratana, and at the end of half a mile Dixie’s Pride, Ratana, Lincoln lluou, Event aiid Wharepiana, were in pretty' close order. Ratana, Event and Lincoln Huon were in line at the back, just behind Dixie’s Pride. The leader lost his place in the straight the second time, and entering the final lap, Event was showing just in front of | Wharepiana and Ratana, with Dixie’s Pride and Bing Boy next. Event led along the hack and round the bend from Wharepiana and Ratana. and won nicely' by three lengths. Bing Boy finished well and defeated Ratana by a neck for third money, the pair being a couple of lengths behind Wharepiana. Event was sold early' in his career to a Christchurch owner for a big figure. Later the purchaser expressed dissatisfaction with the deal, and the breeder took the horse hack and returned the money. As Event lias won lit his last two starts, R. McDonnell may not he a loser as the result of his sportsmanlike action. *
ju a fic'tl of fourteen, Audominion was installed a good favourite for the trotters’ rare, Master Ando and Audo Hoii also being .well befriended. Mangoutu, Tiny Moon, lied Oak and Bonny Spec all broke up inside tho first furlong, and lost a lot of ground. Little Logan was leading at tlie end of half a mile, from Audo Bc'l, Ingle Bingen and Merry Bingen. 11l no 'Thorpe and Audominion were next, at intervals of half a dozen lengths. Blue Thorpe left his feet at the hack, where John Mauritius dashed up and took a place cl os 3 behind the leading bunch. At the mile Ando Bell broke, letting Ingle Bingen and Merry Bingen go past him. When, the concluding circuit was entered upon Little Logan. Ingle Bingen, 'Yudo Bell, Merry Bingen, Audominion, John Mauritius and Mangoutu were all close together, but Mangoutu andIngle Bingen broke up with half a. mile to go. At the hack Ingle Bingen took charge from Audominion and John Mauritius, hut was supplanted hv the last named pair at 'lie bond. Audorninion won by three lengths from John Mauritius, both horses going past the post on a break. Bonny Spec: was five lengths away. ;ust m front of Ingle Bingen and Merry Bingen. All Ihe plaeegctters fractured their handicap times. John .Mauritius putting up the splendid figures of 4.31 2-5 off a 4.37 murk.
A e’tissy hunch of sprinters contested the High Class Handicap, in which Minton Derby wuis penalised a. couple of seconds. A favourite was found in Dillon Wilkes, vhe Tomkinson bracket being second choice, hell Harold be-
gan smartly and soon took charge from Her Ladyship, Alain Voyage and Black Admiral. After four furlongs had been covered Bell Harold, Main Voyage, Black .Admiral, Her Ladyship and Bonnv Logan were leading the bunch, all the runners being well up except Acron Alinton Derby moved up very fast at the hack and at the bend was close behind Bell Harold, Black Admiral, and Alain Voyage. Bell Harold maintained his position until the end, and landed home a winner, but there was a thrilling contest for the other places, Dillon Wilkes. Alinton Derby, Bonn.y Logan, AVillie Logan and Black Admiral being separated by necks and heads only’. Alinton Derb.v was timed at 2.41 1-5 —an Australasian record for the distance.
