NOTES ON THE RACING. (Special to the “Herald.”)' Typical Riccarton weather was experienced for the opening of the C.J.C. autumn meeting, and the track was in excellent condition. The . principal event, the Great Easier, resulted in a meritorious victory for tho English horse Grand Knight, who was always well and won in an impressive fashion. The Champagne Stakes saw Commendation easilj dispose of the opposition. The big Lomond gelding gave less trouble at tho banior Van. had been anticipated, Ho was in front all the way, and was nob nearly extended at the finish. A TWO-HORSE FIELD. The day opened rather tamely, only Many Colours and Kapuna parading for the Kildare Hurdles. In a small pool, the top weight was made a good javourite. Many Colours set out to make the running, and was three lengths in front at the stand hurdle, where he rapped the rail and lost ground. Both struck the obstacle opposite Cutts’s and Kapuna peeked at the next jump. Many Colours was three lengths to the good, six furlongs from home, but Kapuna reduced the gap coming to the home turn. Many Colours ied to tho last hurdle, where lid screwed and ran a bit wide, but quickly straightened and pulled across to the rails. The favourite won comfortably at flic end by a length and a half.
EASY FOR COMMENDATION. Spodo was the only withdrawal from the Champagne Stakes, leaving eight, juveniles to face the barrier. Commendation was always favourite, but. his reputation for waywardness at the post caused many speculators to support Limerick (and Emerson). Commendation and Serin wore inclined to be restive, but Mr McNnb got them awav promptly. Commendation and Scrip wore first to show out, and this pair ran to the main course attended by Note and Papercliasc. Limerick and Front Rank, who were slowest to get moving, then closed up, and at the distance Limerick and Scrip were just behind the favourite. For a moment it looked as if Limerick might make a race of it, but given liis head Commendation almost played with the opposition, and won in a canter by a shade over a length. Limerick defeated Scrip for second money by a neck, Frons Rank being nearly two lengths away; then came Paperchase and Paper Boy. Commendation bears the look of a pampered horse, but ho is a magnificent youngster, and a wonderful galloper.
THE AUTUMN PLATE. Rapier, Piuthair and Mime were fancied in that order for the Autumn Plate. Mime, Gay Queen and Lucinda were first to show out, AVaterlow, Corinthic and Clare Orag being slow to begin. At ’.lie six furlong post Gay Queen was carrying on from Lucinda and AVaterlow, and turning into the straight tlfe Queen was well clear of AVaterlow, with Corinthie and Piuthair moving up. Corinthic ran to the front at the distance, but a bit further on Piuthair put in her claim, and after a sharp struggle, won by a neck. Gay Queeii was a length and a half behind Corinthie, with Rapier another neck away. Piuthair is a throe-year-old half sister to Clandhn and Clarindn, and should l win. more races. On the day she was probably lucky to defeat Corinthic, who lost five or six lengths at tho start. YOUNGSTERS’ RACE. Eleven youngsters contested the Russlc.v Plate, the best backed candidates being Young Locliinvar, Alyson and Spode. Young Locliinvar was* one of the -first to move, and reached tlie course proper well clear of Alyson, Spode and Znrisee. Two furlongs from home, the Longbcnch gelding was nearly four lengths in front, and ridden out, he won by three lengths from Alyson, who was two lengths in advance of Miss Flighty and Delicious. The last- named, a smart looking fillv, hailing from the Mason stable, should not ho long in registering a win. TOPAVEIGHT SCORES IN THE EASTER. All the eighteen acceptors were saddled for the Great Easter, an unusual feature being that only three of them were trained at Iticcarton. The Riddiford bracket. Grand Knight, Royal Divorce and Fool’s Paradise, wound up a pronounced favourite, with Civility well clear in the figures from Set Sail. Com Money was disinclined to lino up and got a couple of lengths file worst of an otherwise rrond despatch. Set Sail and Grand Knight were first to break the line, but After going a furlong, Liciuius joined Set Sail in the
load. At the six furlongs post Liciniua was showing out from Set Sail, Civility, Baldowa, Rosenor and Grand Knight. At the false rail Civility, Licinius, Set Sail and Baldowa were at tho head of a bunch. At the distance Grand Knight challenged the loaders, and finishing brilliantly, tho topweight defeated Civlity by a neat length. Baldowa was only half a length away, & length in front of Set Sail; then came Licinius and Fool’s Paradise, with Siaosi next. Grand Knight was imported from England by Mr Eric Itiddiford. but is raced on lease by Mr V. Riddiford, who is at present on a visit to the Old Country. Civility, who was second last year, ran another good lace, and Baldowa pleased his admirers in connection with the Great Autumn. Father o’Flynn lost liis rider early in the race, and Carnot tailed off at the end l of three furlongs, but made up a lot of ground in the straight. There was some crowding near the half mile post, and an inquiry, which was not concluded, was held into allege tions against Rosenor (for interfering with Royal Divorce), and. Overdrawn (for hampering Siaosi and liob).. A WEST COAST WINNER.
Minotus and Serotina were sorted out as the best prospects for the Gimcrack Handicap. Victory Bond and Minotus, from the extreme outside, could be picked up in the early stages, with Gold Brick leading those nearer the rails. Gold' Brick landed on the main course three lengths clear of Serotina, Victory Bond, Precious and Receipt. Receipt collared Gold Brick at the distance, but was cut down in turn by Booster, who came fast on the outside and. won by a short length. Gold Brick was a length behind Receipt, with Kilris a neck away, fourth. Booster, who is owned and trained on the West Coast, was bred in Otago by Sir A. B. Armour. Receipt did not get away too well, and Gold Brick would have been harder to catch had his rider not stopped to look round. • The first dividend was a handsome one. A GREAT AUTUSIN TRIAL. Seven Great Autumn candidates were produced in the Sockhurn Handicap, including tho two topweights—Gold Light and Count Cavour. The Count was made a solid favourite, carrying £4OO more than Tommy Dodd, who was £3OO better backed than Gold Light or Rivalry. Tommy Dodd, Los Ambus and Mount Marta were first to show, out, Rivalry apparently getting into the tape and Deucalion being steadied. After two furlongs had been covered, Tommy Dodd was showing the way to Los Ambus, Gold Light and Fresco. Half a mile from home Lbs Ambus was three lengtlis in advance of Tommy Dodd and Fresco, and there was no change as far as they were concerned when they swung into the straight. Los' Ambus looked beaten at the distance, but came on again under pressure, and secured the verdict by a short half length from' Tommy Dodd, who beat Rivalry by a similar distance. Fresco was fourth, a neck further away. Count Cavour, who threatened danger in the straight, but failed to come on, was fifth, just in front of Gold Light.
FOOTFALL TAKES WELTER. Zaragoza was the popular selection for the Courtenay Welter, Footfall having more adherents than either Centrepiece or Enare. Centrepiece, Will Oakland and Zaragoza soon opened up daylight from Cliickwheat, who was well clear of Footfall. There was no change in the positions for half su mile, but at the top of the straight Centrepiece was being hard ridden to hold his place. Battling along under punishment he ' shook off Zaragoza again, but had nothing left when Footfall, who had been gradually improving his position, came with an irresistible run and won- comfortably by a length. Zaragoza was half a length behind Centrepiece, with Enare three or four lengths away.. Footfall had not boen up long, and in the circumstances ran an excellent race. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY.
