Fate Of Pressman. 2) REPLY TO ANGORA AUTHORITIES By Cable—Press Association—Copyright, Australian and N.Z. Cabla Association. . LONDON, March 4. Mr Macartney, the "Times” correspondent at Constantinople, Whence ho ■was expelled at two hours’ notice, telegraphs from Mitylene saying that the Angora authorities, indignant over liis despatches recording the closing of the English high school and tile Government’s espionage service, suppressed a telegram to the "Times” on March 29, describing the death of a young officer in a collision with the .police. The Government newspaper “Mihiet” acting on official instructions, reported death by suicide.
The victim’s comrades, after the funeral, raided tho "Milliet’s” office, smashing the windows. Rejed Bey explains that the Government caiinot tolerate foreign correspondents making a luss of an incident, which might happen in any country, and giving undue prominence' to such events with a view to arousing suspicion, suggesting that Turkey’s tranquillity 1 theatened. tranquillity is threatened. Mr Macartney says if the incident is trifling, it is strange that it was hushed up. "Anyway, it hardly warrants my summary expulsion, wiiich happened because my comments were disagreeable to the Turks. 'There is immense, inarticulate ' discontent smouldering under the militavy dictatorship.”
