‘WETS” OR “DRYS”
LEGAL BATTLE IN U.S.A. By Cable—Preea Association—Copyright, Australian and N.Z. Cable Association WASHINGTON, April 4. The Senate Hub-Committee on the Judiciary will open to-morrow public hearings, lusting a fortnight, upon six measures for the repeal or modification of the Volstead Jaw, promising to rival the most famous of Congressional in \ estimations. Both “drys” and “wets’ 1 are marshalling their forces, with Senators Bruce and Edge, conducting the campaign for the latter, and the Aiiti{Jalopn League for the former. There are hundreds of witnesses, including many important governmental heads. These will testify on three questions which are: (1; The possibility of ensocial effects; and (3) public sentiment concerning prohibition.'
The various anti-prohibition measures pending ask for a modification of the Volstead law, permitting beers and wines, and the introduction of the Canadian system of the sales of alcohol and liquors under government agencies in limited quantities, and a national referendum.
It is interesting to note in tho last named connection that the New York State legislature is likely to authorise a State referendum upon prohibition for Novembei 2. Mr JJruce Edge and General Andrews will be first witnesses.
