AMATEUR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP. By T^Maerapt)—Tre** a«toclal*®». CHRISTCHURCH, April 4. An Australian visitor, W. R..' Dobson, won the amateur golf championship at Shirley. His first round totalled 73,' his second making a total .of 148 fOP the first and second roUfids. Dobsofi.' is a plus one man. ; ;• The runner-up was B. V. Wright, of Timaru, the, present champion. His rounds were 7(5 and 71—total 150. A stroke handicap in the morning was won by T. H. A. Richards, with 07; and.the afternoon one by E. Cordncr, with a net score of 71.
PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, April 4, Tho provincial golf championships commenced at Heretaunga on Saturday, when the qualitying. round of 30 holes was completed. The entries, under fifty, were somewhat lower than those of previous years, but this was accounted for by counter tournaments. A. Duncan and T. Horton returned the host cards during the day, but even the best players could do nothing in the heavy westerly gale which upset the approach shots and putting. Players from Masterton, Christchurch and Wellington are compcling._ J. H. Drake returned a card of 77 for 18 holes. In the afternoon only one was under 80.
