REVENUE FRAUDS.
AMAZING REVELATIONS IN ITALY. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright. /y»tralian and N.Z. Cable AiPOClMl**-, (Received April 4, 5.5 p.m.) ROME, April 3. An amazing revenue fraud was disclosed, owing to Mantuzzi (Chief Collector of Taxes in Venice) giving hiiri-' self up to tlie police, on a charge of stealing 14,000,000 lire. Twelve years ago Mantuzzi was earning 40s a week, but lie began gambling in State lotteries, in which he said he won a prize of a million lire. He• purchased a beautiful villa and lived the life of luxury. Really Mantuzzi had been embezzling extensively the means and inheritance tax. According to the law, tlie legatees are not always obliged to pay tho entire tax immediately. They can pay it in instalments. When Mantuzzi received the full amount from legatees, he only entered a fraction in his books. He pocketed the difference and used it to purchase tickets in lotteries. The Government now find* that overmuch latitude has been allowed high revenue officials, whose accounts after this will be rigorously inspected, and subject to strict Fascist control.
