VICTORIA’S IDLE PEOPLE.
REQUEST TQ PREMIER. STRAIGHT TALK TO DEPUTATION f>y Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. MELBOURNE, April 4. A deputation wailed on tho Premier (Mr J. Allan), and requested that work should bo provided to alleviate uiiempioj’ment. It was stated that tho unemployment situation was moro acute than it had ever previously been- at this time of tlio year. Between 80CO and 10,OCO men were out of work in the city. Mr Allan, m reply, said he did not agreo with the .statement that the Ministry should find work for everybody. The trouble was that men on relief work demanded lull wages, though last year showed they did on average only 75 per cent, of tllo normal amount of work. He said an increased tariif might give more work in the city, but it would reduce employment in the country, so there would be no real gain from -that. He declared that the Ministry would do what it could with tho money available. A member of tho deputation: I hope you are not fending us away with_ the impression that the Ministry is on the rocks, and that it can do nothing? Mr Allan': I did not expect you to get any other impression.
