TEMAHU—WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31 (Before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) MOTORIST FINED. [William McTier was charged with being intoxicated while in marge of <v' car. Accused, who was represented by; Mr W. Raymond, pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant Fahey stated that on Saturday night the complainant, Mr' Harding, was talking to a friend near Grey road when defendant came along on his right side of the road, and ran into Mr Harding’s car, doing damage to the extent of £ls. Defendant at that time was under the influence ot liquor. Defendant was a local resident and highly respected. Mr Raymond said defendant had boon driving for 14 years without a mishap. He recognised his duty to pay the amount of the damage, but the loss of his license was of material consequence to him. His Worship said that the attitude taken up by Magistrates throughout the Dominion in regard to such offences was one that commended itself to the Court, but in view of the statements made by, the police and counsel he would not inflict imprisonment. The license would have to be suspended for a period, for that was the greatest penalty the Court could inflict. Defendant would bo convicted and fined £5 and costs, and bis license would be suspended lor six months. De.aulfc of payment was lixod at 14 days imprisonment with hard labour. Judgment by default was given in the following undefended civil cases:— E A. Craighead v. E- Williams, £2O and costs £2 14s; John Jackson and Co. Ltd v. J Moore, £5 19s Id and cost's £1 16s Cel; Henry Lister and Robert Oliphant v. John Tait, £2 and costs £1 13s; D. D. Petrie v. A. Coupland, £2 10s and costs £1 11s 6d.
