WHEAT GROWER DEFENDED.
To the Editor of the “Timaru Herald.” Sir,—Your neutral correspondent “Office Stool,” has not supplied us with much logical reasoning about the Wheat Question. Like a, few others who are fortunate enough to get a good position on air office stool, he thinks that the old farmer, is an ignoramus, and knows'nothing, and if we differ in our opinion with him, wo are narrow minded. Surely he confirms my contention in his adding a few to the list of dependents on the farmer. He says even, the Hindoo who makes our sacks, we are thankful to him. lint they cost ns Is ,10d each! I am very grateful to “Office Stool,” for tilling me, what I do to produce wheat, namely, prepare the ground, sow the seed and then harvest it. He might have put it this way: Do llie toil, pay the cost, take the risk and boar the loss. If “Office Stool,” wants to risk growing a little wheat, 1 can let him a few acres of the earth cheap. I would advise him when lie takes up the pen again to stick to true facts and when making use of Mr Bitehcner’s name not to put words into his mouth, as the word ignorance was not used by him at the farmers’ meeting. When the cause is weak no benefit is gained by trying to abuse the other side. Now; Mr Editor, my object in writing my last letter was to . show that the producer was the source of the wheat industry, and ought to be encouraged by consumers paying at least cost price.—l am etc., EXPERIENCED.
