The political and financial situation has drastically- transformed the Government’s fate, which on Friday .seemed sealed, owing to tho Socialists and Radicals opposing' an increase in tho business Turnover Tax, Upon which the Government insisted, but on Saturday M. Peret (suddenly informed tho Committee of the Chamber that he had given up this tak, and would instead submit proposals for the increase of certain indirect taxes, especially wines, beers, spirits and certain stamp duties. Jt. Peret asked for a little time to put the finishing touches on the new project, and tho Committee readilyagreed to this, and a Government defeat on the Turnover Tax was averted at the eleventh hour.
. The amendment by Deputy- Margaine in favour of a, State monopoly ot petroleum and sugar, adopted by the Finance Committee, provides for State control of the importation of raw petroleum, a nd its derivates, and sugar from January I, 1921, but it is not certain that 'Parliament will pass it.
