A uniqu G attempt to reform the New York criminal wi.l be made by the Marshal Stillman movement, an organisation which.has done social uplift work for many years in tho underworld of the city. Mr Alplieus Gear, son of the founder of the movement, announced that Jow dives will b 0 supplanted by social centres, bonded by col.ege men irom Yale, Princeton and Harvard, who could bo good mixers, able to playgames and to talk to the gangsters in their own language.
Only brawny, two-fisted collegians will be chosen, adept in the art of Keltdefence and able to instil admiration through athletic activities. Mr Gear hopes, moreover, that the attractiveness of the social centres will induce misled youths to join with, the college men, in new activities-designed to give healthier interests. The centres will also extend aid to worthy’ ex-criminals, who desire to return to lawful ways.
