Dickinson, one of those injured in a motor smash in Anzae Avenue on Thursday night, is progressing rap/dly towards recovery. It was at first feared that Dickinson’s injuries might prove fatal. Mavis Mace, aged about 19 years, had half of her face blown away by an explosion of a gun, which it is understood she was cleaning. AUCKLAND, March 28. The condition of Mavis Mace, who ! was injured in a shooting accident on Saturday, shows slight improvement. ELDERLY MAN’S DEATH. Robert Swinburne, aged about fifty years, who lived by himself in a hut at Wnimate Settlement, was found dead in bod on Saturday morning. An inquest into the circumstances was hold in the afternoon before tho Coroner, Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M. William Gunton, labourer, of Waimate, said lie identified tho body as that of Robert Swinburne, who he had last seen alive on Wednesday night, outside an hotel. Deceased had said nothing about feeling unwell. As deponent had not seen him since, lie visited the hut on Saturday morning, accompanied by Mr T. Coffey, and found Swinburne dead in bed. 'Edward Coffey, taxi proprietor, deposed that he had known deceased for twelve months. He seemed quite well on Wednesday morning, but had not been about since. On ojiening the door of the hut deponent, who was accompanied bv Mr Gunton. saw Swinburne lying in bed, dead. They immediately informed the police. He bad not known deceased to be ill at any time. Constable Smith-Palmer said he discovered nothing of .a •suspicious nature in the hut, and tho body bore no marks of violence. TRAIN WRECKS MOTOR-LORRY. MOTORIST INJURED. By T*>eernpli—Pr*M AstftMAfcfon. CHRISTCHURCH, March 28. At 4.45 yesterday' afternoon a train collided with a motor-lorry at tho Templeton railway crossing. Eyewitnesses of the accident state that both lorry and train were travelling slowly. The driver of the lorry, E. Suckling, was thrown out of his seat by the impact, and he landed in front of the engine. There he was picked up by the projecting cowcatcher and thrown aside, and so saved from certain death. His injuries, however, were still severe. He was taken to hospital, -where it was found he had suffered a fracture of tho skull and severe head wounds. The motor-lorry was completely wrecked. To-day is was reported that Suckling’s condition had improved. TRAGEDY AT CHEESE FACTORY. By Telegraph—rr»s< A.i'neialion • NELSON, March 27. A sad fatality' occurred at Bainham cheese factory between nine and ten o’clock this morning. The factory manager, West, was found shot dead in the .secretary’s ..office. West had borrowed a bannnevless guri to shoot some, strav eats. It is thought that his*'not'being acquainted with the mechanism resulted in the gun being accidentally' discharged.- The shot entered tire body over tbo heart, and death must, have been instantaneous. West was about 28 years of' age, and had been in charge of the factory since January of last wear. . Ho came originally from Rcugotea, North Island.
