TIMARU v. AVAITAKI. ANNUAL FIXTURE. Tho annual cricket match between Timaru and AVaitaki High Schools was commenced at Oamaru yesterday. The wicket was on tlib soft side, and the bowlers held tho upper hand throughout. ! Batting first, AVaitaki compiled the 1 poor total of 83, Smith 11, Henry 20, 1 and Sutton 14, being the only batsmen to reach double figures. Thomson secured tho best howling average for ‘Timaru, his figures being 4 for 31. Scott took 3 for 28, and Salt 2 for 19. . I Timaru’s opening batsmen, Murchison and Halstead, both reached double figures. A rot then set in, the remaining batsmen offering very little resistance to the fast and slow bowling of Carrington and Evans respectively, and | the wliole side were out for 64, leaving ! AVaitaki with a lead of 19 runs on the I first innings. Carrington secured the , uxce'lent figures of 5 for 13. ! AVaitaki went in again, and at the call of time had 4 wickets down for ' 73 runs.
