AIR AND AIRS A. E. IZZARD.
The Timaru Main School Committer, with their wives, am! members of t.,t ladies’ committee, met in the- sehoolroom on Wednesday evening to sat farewell to Air and Airs A. E. ly.nr who are leaving Timaru to go to ..ire mouth. The early part, o! the evonii was devoted to cards, games, dams, and music, community singing hen the main feature. . ! After supper which was prov.ded o the ladies' committee Air A. !'. 80. (him secretary), alter apolog.silig I the absence of .Mrs Butcher, Air Bute er (chairman), and Air Dephofl, men hers of the Committee, who were a!' sent in Dunedin, spoke appreciative of the good work which had been doi by Afr l/.zaird as treasurer to the o;n ji’iittee for the [last two years. He e peeiallv mentioned the Alain Selin Jubilee', for which Air 17,7. ard acted-: organising secretary, aurl which on. and all agreed was such a brilliant success mainly owing to the efforts ; the guest of the evening. Airs H. B. Low. in presenting a lovely hand mirror, brush aml comb I Airs Izzurd, spoke in very comp! mentary terms of Airs Discard's work a. the jubilee celebrations, ami also at a . social functions held at the solm.' during the winter months, assurin': her that they would both be very nine missed in tile future. Air Jzzard, in bis reply, said it was a very pleasant surprise to them both to receive such beautiful presents, am: lie assured all those pre-ent that they needed nothing to remind them ol the happy times they had spent while' working tor the Committee. It was a labour of love for which they needed no thanks. After the guests were accorded musical honours, “For They .Vre Jolly Good Follows,” An Id Lang Syne brought a very pleasant evening to a close.
PAREAYELL SOCIAL. PRESENTATION TO LYALL FAMILY. A large and representative gatherin'of the Presbvterians of St. Andrews and district, with their friends, met in thrhall, St. Andrews, to do honour to Airs Lyall sour, and her family. The chair was occupied by the Rev. Alee. AleNeur, who in brief introductory remarks spoke of the great loss the congregation had sustained in the removal of Airs Lyall and her daughters to Timaru. ,', Apologies and good wishes were received from numbers of All's Lvall’s friends who were unable to he present. The first part of the programme consisted of musical items interspersed with short speeches. Solos were rendered bv Airs 11. S. Palmer and Aliss R. Chamberlain. Alessrs C. P. Higginsou and IT. S. Palmer. Aliss Porter gave a recitation, and Aliss A. Evans assisted at the piano. The first speaker was Air A. Stead, of Timaru, who spoke of the warm welcome lie, as a local preacher, alwavs received at the homo of Air and Afrs Lyall. lie was followed by Afr JT. IT. Brown, who spoke as a close friend of the Lyall family, and in a happy speech stressed the great worth of such a fnmilv in any community. The [Rev. I). Rankin expressed his great plasure at being present, and the general regret at the departure of All's Lvall. At this stage in the proceedings Airs Lyall, accompanied bv her sons and daughters, was invited to take a seat upon the platform. AL' AleNeur then spoke of the great place Airs Lyall had filled in the life of the church, her great assistance in the service ol praise, and the remarkable ability and tact displayed by her at all times. On behalf of the congregation he presented Airs Lyall with a travelling rug and a travelling case, expressing the linin' that the gifts would move very useful in the future. Afrs J. K. Russell and Afrs E. Dash then, on behalf of the Ladies’ Guild, presented Airs Lyall with a case of stainless spoons. The Sunday School teachers presented Aliss O. Lyall with a marble bedroom clock in recognition of the great help she had ’^ivon. Mr AV. Annett junr. spoko on behalf of tlio vounu: people of the congregation, an’d referred to the way in winch Mrs Lyall’s home was for a hints time a centre of the social life of the church. Ho then presented useful to Alisses I). and Q. Lyall. Other speakers won' Afr A. AVard (SouthburnL Air G. Porter, and Air Y). Franco, who all referred to the great service rendered to the church by the members of the Lvall family. Air Omm'ias Lvall replied on .behalf of his mother and sisters. He said that his mother had never found her church work a burden, but what she had done bad always been a pleasure to her. He thanked the church for the <ritts received by his mother and sisters. Supper was provided by the ladies, and the remainder of the evening was spent in social intercourse.
