KARU WRECK.
NAUTICAL INQUIRY. AUCKLAND,, March 25. The Knru inquiry was continued today. Geo. NePon. engineer, said he felt the vessel touch a pile when berthing at Whangape. He made an inspection, but failed to find any damage. Crossing the bar ho feit one slight bump. He took soundings and found two inches of water in the hold and four inches in the engine room. The sounding; were normal. Speed was reduced at 10 p.m. Shortly after midnight, there was about a f<>ot of water in the engine room bilges. Witness had the bilges pumped fpiite dry. ,Soundings in the hold .‘bowed 18 inches of water. After half an hour’s pumping it had increased to 19 inches, and del'pile pumping increased at the rate of two indies per hour. Tim ship began to list to starboard about, 7 a.m. Two or three seas swept over the ship, and wad led the engine room door in. Tlio water then began to pour in, ami farther seas opened up a plate in the ship’s side. It was impossible to keep mi steam or to control the All ahnds were ordered on deck. The weather conditions resembled a cyclone.
