DENTAL CLINIC.

NUHSE WELCOMED TO TEMUKA. A meeting was held in the Temuka District High. School on Tuesday on accord a welcome to Nurse Cato, wlio lias been appointed the nurso in charge of the dental clinic at Temujcn. Although the night was stormy, wet, and cold, there were 55 present, including His Worship tile Mayor (Mr G. B. Cartwright) and several of the councillors, members of the School Committee, the whole of the teaching stalt, representatives from Pleasant Point (Messrs A. G. Grossman, G. W. Wakefield, Mrs Batchelor and Mrs 'Wilkin); Winchester (Messrs J. 'White), J. De Benny and H. A. Phi'p), and Clandeboye (Mr and Mrs Staniiand). A brief preliminary meeting was held when the committee met the delegates from the various schools. Mr A. li. Smith presided. The chairman explained that the cost of fitting up tlie dental room had been ±145. Tiio nurse’s salary would be paid by the Department, other incidental expenses would have to be met by the school. The nurse had already commenced her work, and as soon as possililo other schools would be served. This rotation would be directed by the Department and he was sure all schools would be treated fairly.

Mr De Ifenzy. said it was the intention of the Winchester School to establish a room oE their own. Tho plans and specifications were already prepared, and subscriptions were being received to defray expenses. Mr White moved and Mr Eraser seconded that a Central Committee should be appointed, consisting of the headmasters of the Temuka and Winchester Schools, two members from the Temuka committee, | and one each from Winchester, Pleasant Point, Clandeboyc and Milford. — Agreed to. Mr Staniland congratulated the headmaster of tho Winchester School and the members of his committee on tho energetic way they had pioneered tho movement and in bringing it to so successful an issue. Tho chairman (Mr A. E. Smith) called upon Mr Malcolm to open the proceedings with a musical item, which was enthusiastically received, an encore number being insistently demanded. Tho Mayor of Temuka said he was pleased to seo such a largo gathering on sucli au unfavourable night. He extended to Nurse Cato a hoary welcome. to Temuka, and he congratulated her upon being the first deutal nurse appointed in Canterbury. Nurse Cato, who was warmly received, said tho forward movement had been the talk of the Department in Wellington, and she was delighted with tho enthusiasm shown. She was pleased with the room, which, in her opinion was the best dental clinic room in either the North or South Island. Miss Cato said sho expected to he through the first course of her work in Temuka in three months, and after that she won d be pleased to extend her work to other schools. She had requested the chairman to arrange .a meeting with tho parents, because it would be of considerable importance if she could gain the confidence of the parents, especially tho mothers. In answer to Mr Malcolm, Miss Cafe said the average number of children alio could attend to would be 10 per day. Miss Cato received a very attentive hearing, and was frequently applauded during her explanatory talk. Mr White congratulated the nurse and the committee upon sucli a line dental room. During the evening musical items wero given by Miss A. Smith and Mi Salmon. Mrs Salmon played the acconipaiiiments.
