The Labour Aldermen of the City, Council, on a purely party vote of ' 2 to 9, forced througlra decision to give the Commonwealth Shipping Board the contract for - turbo-alternator.s in connection with tho electric power house to cost £700,000, to bo constructed at the Cockatoo dockyard. A Reform Alderman raised the question whether Cockatoo was capable of carrying out the work, and whether, as a Government concern, it had a legal right to compote with local industrial firms. Consideration was also demanded for an English tender, which, besides being lower, would provide a larger amount of work in Australia, but the discussion ’ was gagged.
